For many people, a green lawn is a small but important part of a beautiful home. However, maintaining and irrigating a lush, green lawn all summer long presents an enormous challenge. Your lawn can be the envy of the neighborhood if you follow these five simple tips:
1. Control Weeds
If left unchecked, weeds can grow into huge blemishes on your lawn. Though growing a healthy lawn is the best way to deter weeds, you may need to apply some organic weed killer. Though you may be tempted to use chemicals, keep in mind that they can also harm you and your lawn.
2. Aerate Your Lawn
Throughout the year, your lawn accumulates a layer of organic debris called thatch. If this layer is too dense, your lawn’s roots may have trouble getting the water and nutrients they need. A lawn aerator can punch thousands of little holes in your lawn, allowing it to breathe more easily.
3. Add Fertilizer
Since plants tend to use up nitrogen quickly, you should feed your lawn a fertilizer with a relatively high amount of nitrogen shortly after aerating it. However, you don’t want to overwhelm your lawn—10% nitrogen should be plenty.
4. Mow Often
In order to keep your lawn in check, you should mow it once every week or two. Since cutting the lawn too short can be a tremendous shock to your grass, you should remember to set your mower to a fairly high setting such as three or four inches.
5. Water Weekly
Every lawn needs water in order to stay green and beautiful. Most experts recommend watering your lawn deeply twice a week during the summer. To make watering the lawn easier, consider investing in an irrigation system.
